In this edition of WYSO Weekend:
- A convicted killer from western Ohio became the first person ever to be executed with a two-drug mix that the state of Ohio adopted as its execution method late last year. But as Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports, the execution apparently did not proceed smoothly.
- It was announced this week that an attorney from Yellow Springs has been selected for as a running mate to Democrat Ed Fitzgerald, who is challenging Governor Kasich in the upcoming gubernatorial election. For this week’s PoliticsOhio, Sharen Neuhardt spoke to WYSO’s Emily McCord.
- A proposed state-of-the-art $2.5 million recycling center and solid waste transfer station on Springfield's south side is expected to create 15 full-time jobs. But as WYSO's Wayne Baker reports, the project has met resistance from many residents there.

Nominations for the 2014 Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, and there are local ties in at least two films up for awards. Storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson, who worked with the Cohen Brothers their films Fargo and The Big Lebowski, also worked on the film Inside Llewyn Davis, which is nominated this year for cinematography. Filmmaker Julia Reichert, who also serves as editor and producer for WYSO's ReInvenstion Stories, acted as the associate producer for Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Jack Hall, directed by Edgar Barens. The film is nominated for Best Documentary – Short Subject. Reichert gives full credit to director Barens and says she was honored to provide support in getting the film made.
Cities around the nation, and here in the Miami Vally are preparing celebrations today in honor of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Sinclair Community College, The University of Dayton, and Wright State University have events planned for the next several days. And downtown Dayton will host their annual citywide MLK march and rally today, beginning at 10am. The March will START at the Charles R. Drew Health Center on West Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. The rally will follow at noon at the Dayton Convention Center. In observance of the holiday, City of Dayton offices will be closed today.
