WYSO Weekend: February 22, 2015

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: Dayton Youth Radio and more from our Veteran’s Voices series. We’ll here from a visiting professor at Antioch College who will talk about recent waves of children crossing the US border from Central America. And you'll hear from a Dayton man who shared a close bond with three Muslim American college students shot and killed in Chapel Hill, North Caroline earlier this month.  See full program details below.

  • Earlier this month three Muslim-American students were found dead in their home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina—and a local Dayton resident says he knew them well. Deah Barakat, 23; his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, 21; and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha, 19 were shot and killed over a reported parking dispute. Their neighbor, 46 year old Craig Hicks, turned himself in several hours after the crime. He was indicted by a grand jury last week. Shaad Ahmed, the principal at the Dayton Islamic School, used to live in North Carolina. He worked with all three of the murdered students at Al-Iman School, where he used to teach.  He talks about his former students and the impact of their deaths.
  • On, Tuesday February 24, at Antioch College, Prof. William F. Santiago Valles will speak on his recent work on the military and economic history behind the recent waves of child migration from the Central Americas to the United States.  We spoke to him by phone this week.
  • One of most challenging times for young children in military families is the deployment of a parent. Today our Veterans Voices series continues as we learn about a doctor’s separation from her newborn daughter, and the unique challenges she faced as a mother in the military. Marine corps veteran, Wright State University student, and father Jeremy Dobbins has the story.
  • This week’s Dayton Youth Radio story is by a young man named DeAndre Stringer who grew up without a father and who’s been grappling with what that means in his life. DeAndre is a senior at Ponitz Career Technology Center and a student in the Media Arts program. His story is called Lil Bruh.  Project manager Basim Blunt introduces the story.
  • It’s Oscar night tonight and there are parties taking place in and around Dayton, and a cyber event of sorts, Jonathan McNeil tells us what’s happening at the Neon Movies. The little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs is also holding an Oscar viewing Party, and one virtual party taking place tonight is happening thanks to FilmDayton – you'll  hear from Executive Director Shelly Hulce.
