WYSO Weekend: February 07, 2016

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend:

  • A conversation with Dayton Mayor, Nan Whaley, about downtown development and the selection of a new city manager.
  • The archives of WYSO hold well known and obscure voices from the Vietnam War. In this installment of Rediscovered Radio, you’ll meet a soldier who was deeply changed by what he saw and did in the war. He spoke at Antioch College in 1973, when students around the country were deeply involved in antiwar activities. And a warning, this story contains some language that some listeners might find disturbing. Here is Community Voices producer Jason Reynolds’ story on former First Lieutenant Barry Romo. *Rediscovered Radio is made possible by the generous support of Ohio Humanities. **Next time, we’ll follow Barry Romo to Hanoi, when that city was bombed by American B52s. And we’ll hear recordings of that trip that were made by one of Romo’s fellow travelers, folksinger Joan Baez.

  • On Miami Valley StoryCorps we bring you conversations between local people who went to the StoryCorps booth in West Dayton in the spring of 2014. Today, we hear Mayra Sierra interview Anthony Whitmore. He's the president of MLK Dayton, a local social justice organization. *This Miami Valley StoryCorps interview and many others can be found at WYSO dot org. Today's interview was edited by Community Voices producer Tom Amrhein.

  • Next month, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, DCDC will host a seminar focusing on women's health in the Miami Valley. It will take place over 3 days at the Dayton Crowne Plaza. The conference is entitled Women In Motion: Empowered by Dance. WYSO Community Voices Producer, Basim Blunt spoke with the conference organizers.

  • Dean Regas is the Outreach Coordinator for the Cincinnati Observatory, co-host of Star Gazers on PBS and occasional guest on NPR’s Science Friday. During a stop in Dayton this week we talked to Regas about his job, the current planetary alignments, and what’s ahead for Miami Valley sky watchers.
