WYSO Weekend: December 15, 2013

In this edition of WYSO Weekend:

  • From the Columbine shootings more than a decade ago to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut, last year, schools around the country have assessed and reassessed their safety procedures.  And many have enhanced their safety plans with a mix of training and technology.
  • Ohio’s newest racino opened Thursday.  The new gaming facility in Turtlecreek Township is expected to be a boon to the local economy.

  • Economics reporter Lewis Wallace will give us a preview and some background on WYSO’s upcoming series – WYSO Curious.

  • History is broken down into the moments we remember about our own lives, like weddings and birthdays and graduations. And then there are DAYS when we pause to remember together, as a nation, an event that affected us all. Pearl Harbor Day – just passed - when Japanese pilots attacked American navy ships north of Honolulu - is one of those, even though its now more than 7 decades ago. Commentator Dan Patterson finds himself turning it over and over in his mind.

Jerry began volunteering at WYSO in 1991 and hosting Sunday night's Alpha Rhythms in 1992. He joined the YSO staff in 2007 as Morning Edition Host, then All Things Considered. He's hosted Sunday morning's WYSO Weekend since 2008 and produced several radio dramas and specials . In 2009 Jerry received the Best Feature award from Public Radio News Directors Inc., and was named the 2023 winner of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Best Anchor/News Host award. His current, heart-felt projects include the occasional series Bulletin Board Diaries, which focuses on local, old-school advertisers and small business owners. He has also returned as the co-host Alpha Rhythms.
