WYSO Weekend: December 14, 2014

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: On today’s program – a new, local series called Veterans’ Voices. You will hear military veterans from the Miami Valley interviewing their fellow veterans. And you’ll learn about a collaboration between students at the Dayton Regional STEM School and the Newport Aquarium—it called the Living Lens Project. See full program details below.

  • Commercial drones could be in Ohio’s skies sooner than expected. That’s because the Federal Aviation Administration has granted a Dayton company an exception to the current ban on commercial drones. WYSO’s Lewis Wallace reports.
  • This week job seekers filled the Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community College to hear auto-glass manufacturer Fuyao talk about the company and its hiring process. Rebecca Ruan-O’Shaughnessy is the director of legal affairs and administrative services at Fuyao. We spoke to her just after the event. *People who want to apply are being directed to www.Ohiomeansjobs.gov, the state's economic development website.

  • Ohio lawmakers have finally come to a bi-partisan agreement on redistricting that many are calling historic. The process of drawing lines for legislative districts has been controversial in the past. But as Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles reports, an agreement passed by legislators in the very early hours of Friday morning will be sold to Ohioans as a way to make that process fairer.

  • Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley says more than 300 people attended the ribbon-cutting for a large new facility on South Main Street Tuesday morning. Marketing Coordinator Kim Bramlage says Goodwill had long outgrown the Kuntz Road building where the organization has been centered the last 30 years.

  • This afternoon at 3 on WYSO listen we’ll air a program entitled From the Bully Pulpit to Civic Life – It’s a conversation between two great-grandsons of former American presidents—Former Ohio Governor Bob Taft and Antioch College President Mark Roosevelt. The moderated event took place earlier this fall. You'll hear an excerpt and you can listen to the full program here.
  • Today on WYSO we begin a new, local series called Veterans’ Voices. You will hear military veterans from the Miami Valley interviewing their fellow veterans. The project is a collaboration with the Wright State University Veteran and Military Center. Vets have a lot in common, no matter when they served and one issue they all confront sooner or later is re-entry into civilian life. Air Force veteran Allison Loy is a Wright State student now. She separated from the military 15 months ago and knows the challenges first hand. She interviewed fellow airman Lieutenant Bobby Walker, who’s making his transition out of the Air Force in a few weeks. ** To learn more about resources for local veterans who are separating from the service – go to our website: w-y-s-o dot o-r-g. Veterans Voices is part of Veterans Coming Home, a public media effort to support veterans, made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

  • This school year, students at the Dayton Regional STEM School teamed up with the Newport Aquarium's Wave Foundation to create short documentaries and a website featuring four different species who make their home at the aquarium. To get details about the program and its impact, We spoke with STEM senior, Tess Greene—the executive producer of the Living Lens Project. ***To find out more about the project checkout the Living Lens project on Facebook.
