WYSO Weekend: December 06, 2015

WYSO Weekend

In this edition of WYSO Weekend: a powerful Veteran’s Voices looks at Vets and the high rates of suicide they experience. Later in the program, the intrastate football rivalry between Cincinnati and Cleveland marches on. And, we’ll hear about the power of using art as activism. See full details below.

  • Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is a magical ballet. With dozens of parts for children (mice, gingerbread men, sugarplum-fairy-attendants!), it’s an endearing work. And if you’re the choreographer—the person trying to organize all those dancers—it’s no easy task. Culture Couch producer Jason Reynolds takes us behind the scenes at the Dayton Ballet. This story was produced by Community Voices producer Jason Reynolds for Culture Couch, WYSO’s occasional series about creativity and the arts. For more information about the Dayton Ballet, rehearsal photos, and links, visit W-Y-S-O dot org or Dayton Performing Arts dot org.
  • Art can be produced to simply entertain, create awareness, or even serve as a call to action. A Herndon Gallery exhibition at Antioch College called Artists as Activists opened on Friday. The exhibit was guest curated by SaadGhosn who recently authored a new book under the same title. To find out a little bit about Saad and the new exhibit, we spoke to him by phone earlier this week.  Here’s part of that conversation.
  • The suicide rate among veterans has nearly doubled since 2005, and this has prompted the military to conduct a series of decadelong studies to find out why. But more information is needed since early findings have produced contradictory results. Answers will not come easy. Today our Veterans Voice series continues with Air Force veteran, and Wright State University student Matt Bauer of Vandalia, and Air Force veteran George Denillo, who remember their friend, and fellow officer, Sean. Veterans Voices is produced in collaboration with the Veteran and Military Center at Wright State University. Funding for this series comes from Ohio Humanities.
  • On December 12th the Grassroots Enrichment Center in Dayton will hold The Surrealist Ball - a fundraiser for the center's STRONG program.  Earlier this week, Lisa Patrick from Grassroots visited the WYSO studios and talked to Kaleidoscope host Juliet Fromholt about the program. Grassroots will host a benefit for Strong called the Surrealist Ball on December 12th.  For more information and to hear this full interview, visit our website, WYSO dot org.
  • It's something Ohioans just know. When it comes to football - Cincinnatians don’t like Cleveland... and Clevelanders don’t not like Cincinnati. How could two major cities in the same state -- a state known as the heart of it all – have so little love for each other? In this reports from Ohio Public Radio, WVXU'sTanaWeingartner teamed up with KabirBhatia at WKSU in Kent to look for an answer.
  • Bill Felker with Poor Will's Almanack.
Jerry began volunteering at WYSO in 1991 and hosting Sunday night's Alpha Rhythms in 1992. He joined the YSO staff in 2007 as Morning Edition Host, then All Things Considered.
