Wilberforce University is the nation’s oldest, private historically black college and university (HBCU).

Officials announced yesterday that Herman J. Felton Jr. will become Wilberforce University’s 21st president. He will replace Dr. Algeania Freeman, who announced her retirement earlier this month.

Felton previously worked as the Senior Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Livingstone College in North Carolina. He also served 8 years in the Marine Corps.

A university spokesperson said Felton was selected because of his proven leadership skills, work ethic, and ability to fundraise.

Under Dr. Freeman’s leadership, fundraising goals were met and the school’s shaky accreditation status was secured through 2020. Felton has said raising money for the school will be one of his main focuses in the position.

He’s set to begin work in the coming weeks.
