Monday is Memorial Day. Originally it was called Decoration Day for the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags as a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. In the 1960’s the date was changed from May 30 to a Monday so there could be a three day weekend and it officially changed from Decoration Day to Memorial Day.
And part of the Memorial Day weekend is the Patriot Freedom Festival which is at the Dayton VA on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00AM to 6:00PM. There are all kind of performers, entertainers and re-enactors. And on Saturday at 6:00pm in the Dayton VA in The Grotto they are having an Interfaith Service recognizing the service and sacrifice of our military veterans. Dress is casual - bring a folding chair and enjoy the service and beautiful natural surroundings.
And if you want an old-fashioned patriotic celebration then on Sunday head over to the Carillon Park for a fun filled day of history and music. The whole family can explore the exhibits and buildings while participating in hands-on historical activities like musket firing and candle dipping. The day ends with a patriotic concert by the Dayton Philharmonic with special performances from the Dayton Opera and Dayton Ballet. A great way to start the summer!
