What's Great in Dayton: July 6 - 12, 2012

courtesy of Dayton History
NCR Cash Register

Hi Niki……….some say it’s not the heat….it’s the humidity…..and we have both of them right here in Dayton!

Today is First Friday….and if you go over to the MetroParks Pavilion, 5-7:30 p.m.
the concert features local favorite Hey There Morgan. The concession will be open and beer will be sold from 5 to 7 p.m. New this year - free kayak and bike rentals during the concerts! And the party doesn't end at RiverScape! After the concert, be sure to check out downtown's galleries and other locations participating in the First Friday monthly art hop.

And also there is a festival celebrating Tiki culture on First Friday. They will host a block party in the Oregon District from 5 to 10 p.m. Live surf and rockabilly bands will perform. The festival also will include Tiki carvers, street performers, hot rod displays and vendors.

If you want to buy or sell or trade or look at NCR cash registers then on Saturday, at Carillon Park, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm they are having the Cash Register Collectors Club Swap Meet.

Three of the world's best choirs will be performing on Sunday at 3:00pm at Grace United Methodist Church. This is part of the World Choir Games which is happening now in Cinci. Grace Church is hosting a Friendship Concert featuring three choirs - from Croatia, Venezuela and Kentucky - who have come to compete. It will be
the only Dayton venue to host a concert connected to the World Choir Games.

And this weekend at the Victoria Theatre Cool Films, is Birdman of Alcatraz. This fascinating portrayal by Burt Lancaster will give you the inside story on the “Birdman of Alcatraz” and how he managed to achieve fame from behind bars. And BEFORE THE MOVIE there is free popcorn and sodas in the lobby and, an authentic theatre organ concert and sing-a-long begins 30 minutes prior to showtime!
