Union Urges Furloughed Wright-Patt Workers To Appeal

A labor union representing thousands of civilian employees at Ohio's largest military base wants them to appeal furlough notices resulting from federal budget cuts.

More than 10,000 civilian employees at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton began receiving the 11-day furlough notices Friday. The U.S. Department of Defense said 680,000 civilian employees will get the furloughs one day a week for 11 weeks, starting July 8.

The Dayton Daily News reports the American Federation of Government Employees Council 214 is urging the base's civilian civil service employees to respond to their notices within seven days. The union says they should respond with arguments against taking unpaid time off.

The union hopes enough people will appeal to have an impact.

The federation represents more than 6,000 Wright-Patterson workers.
