Trammell Sentence Handed Down
The former chairman of an Atlanta-based civil rights organization has been sentenced to 18 months in prison on theft and other felony charges linked to a meal program for older, poor people in southwest Ohio.
In addition to the prison sentence, judge Michael Tucker ordered Rev. Raleigh Trammell to pay about $38,000 in restitution to Montgomery County.
In June, a jury found the 74-year-old Trammell guilty of 51 charges connected with the home-delivered meals service. The program operated out of the Dayton chapter headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Trammell also served as the organization’s national chairperson.
The chapter had a contract for delivery of healthy meals to low-income senior citizens. Prosecutors say the crimes involved meals that county officials paid for but weren't delivered.
Trammell has been ordered to report to jail on the morning of September 5th
