Sugarcreek Township is asking voters to approve new funding for fire and emergency services. The township's fire department has been in the news since the construction of Cornerstone, the development that houses Costco in Centerville.
Sugarcreek was set to provide emergency services for Cornerstone since Centerville doesn’t have a fire department, but the township claimed it wasn’t given enough money to do so. The dispute lasted years and was resolved towards the end of the summer.
The township is now asking voters to approve a 2.9 mill levy to support its fire department. The money will go toward the purchase of new equipment.
Barry Tiffany, Sugarcreek Township administrator, says they waited to work out the details of the levy until the Cornerstone agreement was finalized.
“If we weren’t able to negotiate anything from the City of Centerville, and we weren’t receiving any compensation we would have had to ask for at least twice as much on the levy as we’re asking for."
Tiffany says revenue from this levy will not be used to support emergency service to the Cornerstone development.
