State Impact Ohio

The Ohio school superintendent has announced he will retire at the end of the year. In a release, Richard Ross says he came out of retirement four years ago to help Ohio schools, first as an advisor to John Kasich and then as superintendent since 2013—now he’s ready to go back. Ross has been criticized recently because of a scandal over Ohio charter schools. Leaders scrubbed grades to make the schools look like they were performing better than they were—although the superintendent has maintained he wasn’t aware of that data tinkering. He’s also been under fire from some Democrats for his role in a state takeover of Youngstown City Schools.

The release from the Ohio Department of ed credited him with increasing early childhood education in the state and helping to address truancy, among other things. His last day will be December 31.
