Springfield Radio Station Relocating to Xenia

Springfield's WEEC Christian radio station has announced that it will be moving its studios to Xenia. The station will be partnering with the international Christian group, Athletes in Action, whose world headquarters is located in Greene County.

For the past 50 years, FM 100.7, WEEC, has been broadcasting Christian music and bible lessons from its studios in Springfield, Ohio. Five years ago, the station merged with Miamisburg-based WFCJ, also a Christian station.

The merger created a new company called Strong Tower Christian Media, which continued operating out of Springfield.  But that created a problem. The FCC says a station cannot operate farther than 25 miles from its city of license. The move to Xenia will solve that problem.

WEEC's General Manager, Tracy Figley, says the move from Springfield to Xenia will help streamline operations.

"We decided when we made the decision to move that we had to be more intentional about being involved in Springfield and the Dayton station being involved in Miamisburg," Figley said. "We are putting things into place right now that will permit us to continue to promote what is going on in our specific areas, while at the same working with better efficiency and better stewardship together."

Athletes in Action has a worldwide reach with its operations. Figley says a building has been purchased on AIA's campus to house the radio station's studios, and the business arrangement is running smoothly.

WEEC operates at 50,000 watts and the station's transmitter will stay in Clark County. The programming and on-air voices will not be changed. All 14 full and part-time employees of WEEC will make the move to Xenia.

Wittenberg University's WUSO-FM is now the last remaining Springfield radio station with announcers.
