During a morning press conference, Yellow Springs Council President Judith Hempling and Vice-President Lori Askeland released a detailed statement about the recent standoff situation involving Paul E. Schenck.
In response to the terrible tragedy which occurred in our community two nights ago. We want to express our thanks to all those who worked to protect and serve our dear community of Yellow Springs.
This includes our staff, dispatch and police officers, the Miami Township Fire and Rescue, the Greene County Sheriff and deputies and the many others who provided support and helped to contain this situation.
We are holding in our hearts and prayers these first responders as well as the families in the High Street neighborhood who were on the middle of this terrifying situation, those who knew and cared about Paul E. Schenck and his family and all other affected by this tragedy.
We are very sorry that this death ended in the death of one of our community members, and we are relieved and thankful that no one else was seriously injured.
As we continue to process what has occurred, the Ohio Crisis Response Team, which comes from the Attorney General's Office, and the Greene County Victim Assistance Program, have offered their help.
The Ohio Crisis Response Team is a volunteer organization responding to communities in the aftermath of traumatic events. This organization has been operational since 1996.
The crisis responders are NOVA (National Organization for Victim Assistance) trained professionals. The team members are from varying backgrounds with a wealth of experience in working with communities in crisis.
They help local decision makers identify groups of people at risk, provide training to the community caregivers who will be providing ongoing support and lead group crisis intervention sessions to help those traumatized by the incident to begin to talk about their reactions to the traumatic event and to cope.
The Crisis Response Team will be leading two simultaneous sessions this evening at the Bryan Center between 6-7:30 p.m. We encourage all who have been affected by this incident to attend.
This is one of the resources which can help our community to heal. Now more than even, we need to come together as a community to support and care for one another.
It is that caring for one another which will help us to heal and move forward from an event that has deeply affected many in our community.
