Police Name Suspect In Springfield Murder, Search Continues

Police have named a suspect involved in the shooting that claimed the life of a 17-year-old Springfield High School student early Sunday morning. A murder warrant has been issued for the Clark County teenager.

Springfield Police have been investigating the death of student-athlete Jeffrey Wellington early Sunday morning in the 2300 block of North Limestone Street. Police Chief Stephen Moody's office says a warrant has been issued for 17-year-old Tyrin Hawkins of Springfield.

"He's a 17-year-old, black male. He's about 5-foot-4, 165, black hair and brown eyes and there is an outstanding warrant for him for juvenile deliquency murder," according to a police investigator. "But he (Hawkins) has packed his bags from his home and left there so we don't know where he is currently at."

Superintendent Dr. David Estrop says a crisis team was brought in to help deal with Wellington's death. He says the teen was well-liked.

"Jeffrey was an athlete and great citizen who was a very positive member of Springfield High School and will be missed greatly."

Police say they are unable to release any further information about the case since it's still under investigation.
