DAYTON, Ohio(AP) - The Dayton Public Schools, one of Ohio's bigger school districts has barred teachers from becoming friendly with students on Facebook and other social networking sites.
The new policy also prohibits teachers from texting or sending instant messages to students. And, the educators may not respond to students' attempts at communicating through any personal or professional accounts not approved by the district.
The Dayton Daily News reports school officials consulted with the Ohio School Boards Association, which has suggested that districts lay out policies against teachers fraternizing with students through electronic media.
The president of Dayton's teachers' union says the district's updated code is "probably a safe thing" for his members.
In Missouri, a judge has blocked a new state law that limits online communication between teachers and students.
