Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland's U.S. Senate campaign says it raised more than $671,000 in 35 days and picked up momentum toward the end of the year's first quarter.

Strickland officially jumped into the race in late February. His campaign said Thursday that $469,601 came in the last two weeks of the fundraising period. Strickland's campaign also reported $649,171 cash on hand.

Strickland is vying for the Democratic nomination with Cincinnati city councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, whose campaign said Monday it raised more than $757,000 in the first three months of this year.

Sen. Rob Portman's campaign announced earlier it had raised more than $2.75 million this year. That gave the Republican incumbent more than $8 million on hand for what's expected to be a hotly contested, nationally watched race.
