New Retailers Hit the Dayton Area: WYSO’s Lewis Wallace Talks with Olivia Barrow

In recent months, three national retailers have recently announced they’re coming to the Miami Valley: Whole Foods, Costco and H&M.

Whole Foods signed a lease for a 45,000 square foot space in Centerville earlier this month, although the opening day is yet unknown. And wholesaler Costco also chose Centerville as a landing spot for its first Dayton-area location; it will become the centerpiece of the Cornerstone shopping center near I-675.

Finally, this summer Barrow reported that low-cost fashion retailer H&M plans to open a location at the Mall at Fairfield Commons. That opening date is also unknown.

Although some Dayton-area residents have long been calling for a Whole Foods, Barrow says that location puts the new store extremely close to other health food and major grocery stores. Meanwhile, some residents of downtown Dayton continue to call for more grocery shopping options within city limits. Barrow says downtown Dayton was likely never under consideration for a new Whole Foods, because the retailer seeks a high concentration of higher-income and educated people in new locations.
