New Ohio Congressional Map Sparking Party Faceoffs

Competitive congressional primaries are being decided around Ohio as a result of a revamped congressional map. Democratic voters must choose between longtime U.S. Reps. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo and Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland in a newly drawn district that stretches across the Lake Erie shoreline. A four-way Democratic contest is also under way for a new Columbus district. Former congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy faces Ted Celeste, brother of former Gov. Dick Celeste; former state lawmaker Joyce Beatty; and Columbus city councilwoman Priscilla Tyson. In southwest Ohio, Republican U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt is up against four others, including Iraq war veteran Brad Wenstrup. Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel is favored to win a six-way GOP primary for the U.S. Senate. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in the fall.
