Authorities are trying to determine what led to a shooting at a Veterans Affairs hospital that ended with a housekeeping employee shot in the ankle and a retired worker in custody.
Police say 61-year-old Paul Burnside was shot Monday in a struggle over a gun with 59-year-old Neil Moore. They say the revolver went off as the two fought over it in an employee break room.
Authorities say Moore was taken into custody at another hospital where he was seeking psychiatric treatment.
Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl says Moore and Burnside apparently knew each other. But investigators haven't yet determined a motive.
The hospital says Moore worked in housekeeping for 27 years before retiring last October and that Burnside is a housekeeping aide who started work in 1998.
The Dayton Daily News reports that the Dayton VA will hold meetings today to review the security measure taken during the incident Monday. The shooting initiated a lock-down of the hospital and a room-by-room check for the suspect. So far, no changes have been made.
