Montgomery County To Hold Forum On The “Talent Pipeline” Tuesday

Montgomery County will hold a forum on workforce development Tuesday from 5:30pm-7:30pm at Sinclair Community College. Area employers and educators will discuss the need for a “talent pipeline” to address a perceived gap between workforce training for young people and available jobs in a changing market.

Local officials want talented young people to be channeled from school, to internships and apprenticeships, to jobs and careers.

Katie McNeil with Miami Machine Corporation is one of many employers who see a growing skills gap as older workers retire.

“As a company owner, and American manufacturer, we have terrific machinists, welders, engineers, and the skill level is very important,” she said last month at the Dayton Region Manufacturers’ Association Manufacturing Technology Trade Show. “The collaboration, the teamwork, the problem-solving, the critical thinking...these are essential skills.”

McNeil said education and a desireto learn are key as manufacturing becomes increasingly high-tech.

Organizers of Tuesday night’s forum are asking schools and businesses to share what they are doing to train and inspire younger workers in all sectors. The broad sector with the greatest job growth in Dayton metro area since the year 2000 is education and health care services; manufacturing, transportation and utilities and government employment have all seen steep cuts in job numbers.
