The group Equality Springfield is trying to bring people to the Springfield City Commission meeting Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to protest discrimination.
Three years ago, Springfield’s commission rejected a change in the city's ordinance, which would have banned workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Equality Springfield members want people to attend the commission meeting on the three year anniversary.
About four in five Ohio workers are NOT covered by LGBT non-discrimination rules.
In 2012, Springfield Commissioners Kevin O’Neill, Dan Martin and Joyce Chilton voted against adding the language to the city’s non-discrimination rules, while Commissioner Karen Duncan and Mayor Warren Copeland were in favor of adding it. Each of the commissioners and mayor are still in office, and there’s no new vote planned on the matter.
Yellow Springs, Dayton and Cincinnati are among the Ohio cities and towns that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
