Clark County Murder Suspect Still At-Large

Springfield police are still looking for a 17-year-old Clark County man in connection with the murder of a Springfield High School student. Now, several law enforcement agencies have joined in the search for the suspect.

Jeffrey Wellington, a 17-year-old student-athlete, was shot and killed Sunday morning. Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Tyrin Hawkins who was also a student at Springfield High School.

US Marshals have joined the search for Hawkins, along with the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team.

Springfield Superintendent Dr. David Estrop says school officials are working with law enforcement to provide any help they can.

"Even though it did not occur at school, nor at a school function, we are cooperating with them fully into the investigation of this," he said.

School District Communications Consultant, Kim Fish, says the school is still implementing its crisis plan to help students and staff deal with their  grief.

"We understand that this is going to be a process and take more than a day," Fish said. "Students are supporting each other really well, coming up with even ideas with ways that they might honor him at prom which is this weekend and other things like that."

A memorial fund for Wellington's family has been set-up at PNC Bank to help pay for funeral arrangements.
