Changes to Ohio Consumer Law Headed to Governor

A proposal that would allow Ohio businesses to make a "cure" offer when sued for unfairness or deception is headed to the governor's desk over the objections of Democrats.

The bill includes what's referred to as a "right to cure" provision backed by several business groups, including auto dealers. The Columbus Dispatch reports the Ohio House on Tuesday voted 56-35 to accept changes the Senate made to an earlier version of the bill.  It now goes to Republican Gov. John Kasich, who's expected to sign it.

If a consumer rejects the cure offer, the lawsuit would move forward. If the court awards less, the consumer could not benefit from provisions that allow a buyer to collect three times the financial damage, court costs and  attorney fees.
