Book Nook: Part Swan, Part Goose - An Uncommon Memoir of Womanhood, Work and Family by Swoosie Kurtz

Swoosie Kurtz has had a long career as an actor in movies, on television and on stage. Her book "Part Swan, Part Goose - An Uncommon Memoir of Womanhood, Work and Family" is not your typical Hollywood memoir, however.

Kurtz was the only child of a pair of amazing parents and this book is a loving tribute to them. Her dad was a war hero, an Olympic swimmer, and an all-American sort of guy who truly pulled himself up by his bootstraps.  Her parents had a storybook marriage and this book is richly illustrated with classic photos of the two of them looking like the most charming couple ever.

Her mother wrote a memoir of the World War Two years and each chapter in this book opens with an excerpt from her mom's story. Her mother is now 98 years old and she lives with Kurtz, who is now dealing with a situation familiar to many Americans; her mom requires round-the-clock care now and Kurtz describes her rather unique approach to dealing with her mom's dementia.

And of course there are lots of lovely recollections here about the author's many roles from her first cameo appearance on "The Donna Reed Show" to her current role in the TV series "Mike and Molly."

In this interview you'll also discover that Swoosie is a very generous interview subject- speaking with her was a complete pleasure.
