AME Church To Help Wilberforce University Raise Money To Fight Show Cause Order

There's a chance that Wilberforce University could lose its accreditation, but the university is about to get some help from one of its biggest supporters in order to keep its doors open.

The African American Episcopal Church put together the fundraising campaign to help Wilberforce battle a show cause order from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The order states that the university could lose its accreditation due to fiscal and academic difficulties.

McKinley Young, third district bishop for the AME church and chancellor of the Wilberforce Board of Trustees, says the AME church stands firmly behind Wilberforce.

"We are pleased over  the partnership that we have had with the church through the years and we look forward to that being enlarged in the years to come," Young said. "We are making an appeal for any and all gifts to help us and making certain that Wilberforce is able to respond favorably to the Show Cause challenges that exist from the North Central Association and to make certain that we raise the revenue that the institution will need to go forward."

The fundraising initiative is expected to raise $5 million for the university, as more than 7,000 AME churches will take part in the campaign.

Wilberforce University also recently received a commitment of $2 million from its alumni.
