Wayne Baker is a graduate of Yellow Springs High School and Central State University. He has worked in print media for several years covering news and sports.  Baker has coached youth basketball in the Yellow Springs school system and served on the Human Relations Commission.

Springfield to Honor Local Boxing Legend

After years of fundraising, a statue will be erected on Saturday by the old South High School in Springfield to honor boxing legend Davey Moore. It marks the 50th year after his death.

Moore was the boxing icon that inspired the Bob Dylan song; "Who Killed Davey Moore?"
 
Moore was born in Springfield.  He used boxing to climb out of Clark County to eventually compete in the Olympics and later become the featherweight champion of the world. After he was knocked out during a fight with Cuban boxer Sugar Ramos in 1963, he died a few days later.

Open Meeting in Springfield To Discuss Airport Funding

This afternoon in Springfield the Ohio Department of Transportation will host an open meeting aimed at helping Ohio's publicly owned airports make their dollars go farther. In 2012, the Federal Aviation Association gave nearly $26 million and ODOT provided close to $725,000 in grant to Ohio's 97  public airports.

The state agency says that money didn't address all the needs of those airports.

Springfield's Director of Economic Development, Tom Franzen, feels airports could receive even less funding in the future.

New Program in Springfield Aims to Fight Graffiti

Each year, over 1,000 complaints of graffiti-related vandalism are made in Springfield. This year over 700 incidents have been reported so far according to police. Graffiti artist also knows as taggers have even spray painted historic buildings like the old State Theater.

Urban Light Ministries Helps Local Men Become Better Fathers

A recent U.S. Census Bureau report shows one in three children nationwide grow up in a fatherless home. A local organization in Clark County helps local men become better fathers. The organization has just received a new grant that will help the group called Urban Light Ministries serve more people.

The Ohio Commission on Fatherhood awarded Urban Light  Ministries a four-year, $420,000 grant to partner with the Ohio Job & Family Services to offer fatherhood programs in Clark, Montgomery and Greene Counties.

Only six awards were given to agencies around the state.
