Niki Dakota

Music Director and Host, Excursions

Born a Hoosier, but only living there in spurts, Niki Dakota spent much of her young life moving around the United States with her archeologist mother. Throughout these years, there was always a ukulele somewhere close at hand. By the time the family settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ms. Dakota found herself in pursuit of professional music-making as she headed-up the Alterna-Folk band, Plow On Boy. In the course of her first live radio interview to promote the band, Niki’s keen excitedness manifest itself in extreme chattiness. At the conclusion of the segment, the DJ closed the mic and said, “You need to be in radio."  That was in 1990.

In 2002, Niki’s radio career brought her to WYSO where she continues to enjoy a love of music and shares that love with the Miami Valley weekdays on Excursions.

The Midwest Outdoor Experience Takes Place This Weekend, Oct. 5-6.

The Midwest Outdoor experience kicks off today, Oct. 5th, at 6:00pm, and will last until tomorrow night, Oct. 6th, at Eastwood Metropark.  Teamed with Dayton Music Festival and vendors from around the country, this year's event is expected to draw a larger crowd than in recent years.

This year's event will provide activities for the whole family icluding: camping, fly fishing, climbing, slacklining, IMBA bike village, geocaching, and disc golf. There will also be a 5k run taking place this evening. More experienced athletes can compete in any of the competitions.

Ashley Martin live on Excursions

Ashley Martin, from Springboro, OH, attended school at Belmont University in Nashville, TN where she studied Music Business. She has recorded with such music talents as Frankie Ballard.

On Monday October 1st, 2012, Ashley made her radio debut on Excursions with Niki Dakota. During the show, she performed "Hello Lonely" and "Heartbreak Medicine" from her album Torn.

She kicks off the Midwest Outdoor Experience on Friday at 6:30pm. The event will take place on October 5-6. For more information visit www.Outdoorx.org or www.metroparks.org

Fred Bartenstein Helps Tell the Story of a Bluegrass Bluesman

Fred Bartenstein has been a bluegrass presence on the WYSO airwaves since the 1980's hosting programs such as Bluegrass Countdown and Banks of the Ohio.  Recently he edited Bluegrass Bluesman: A Memoir, which captures the stories and reflections of Josh Graves, an American musician who born in 1927. 

Bartenstein joins Excursions host Niki Dakota in the WYSO studio to talk about Graves' life and music and the process of compiling material for the book.

Collaboration Results in Ruckus Roboticus' T.G.I.F.

Ruckus Roboticus discovered Spanky Wilson when she released a record in 2006.  Later when Ruckus was writing a new song, he knew he wanted Spanky Wilson as a vocalist.  The resulting single is "T.G.I.F." which will be released on September 21st. 

Ruckus Roboticus will celebrate the release of "T.G.I.F." and premiere the music video on September 20th at One Eyed Jacks in Fairborn.

Magic Jackson Releases Venus In Transit

The vibe of a summer in the 1970s is alive and well on Magic Jackson's new album, Venus In Transit.  For their sophomore album, the band sought feedback from friends and fans before the release to ensure they captured the sound they were seeking.  Magic Jackson will celebrate the release of Venus in Transit on Saturday, September 15 at Canal Street Tavern.  Nathan Lewis visisted the WYSO studios to share from tracks from the new album and spoke with Niki Dakota about the recording process.
