Niki Dakota

Music Director and Host, Excursions

Born a Hoosier, but only living there in spurts, Niki Dakota spent much of her young life moving around the United States with her archeologist mother. Throughout these years, there was always a ukulele somewhere close at hand. By the time the family settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ms. Dakota found herself in pursuit of professional music-making as she headed-up the Alterna-Folk band, Plow On Boy. In the course of her first live radio interview to promote the band, Niki’s keen excitedness manifest itself in extreme chattiness. At the conclusion of the segment, the DJ closed the mic and said, “You need to be in radio."  That was in 1990.

In 2002, Niki’s radio career brought her to WYSO where she continues to enjoy a love of music and shares that love with the Miami Valley weekdays on Excursions.

William The Accountant Live on Excursions 2/1/2013

Accounting has never sounded better than when it's involved with the creative minds of Kevin Bednar, Zachary Tamplin, Andrew Hahn, Chris Murphy, and Kevin Luce. They are the five members that make up Excursions' latest musical guests, William The Accountant." They will be part of the third annual Dayton Does Dayton at Canal Street Tavern this weekend, February 1st and 2nd at 7pm. The members of the band have roots in Columbus, Springfield and Yellow Springs. While in the WYSO studio they performed songs off their album, "Strophes," including: "To be a creator," "Mail Rooms," and "134."

Cinder Home Live on Excursions. 2/1/2012

Among many of great bands attending this year's third annual Dayton Does Dayton event at Canal Street Tavern this weekend, February 1st and 2nd, is Cinder Home. They are Shawn Zerkle (Guitar/vocals), Calvin Garber (Guitar/Mandolin/Perc.), Gabe Cottrel (Banjo/Perc./Vocals), Meredith Miles (Viola), and Trey Miller (Bass).

Reyna and Dana Live on Excursions. 1/30/2012

WYSO welcomed into the studio the music of Reyna and Dana. The duo consists of Reyna Spears on piano and Dana Farley on guitar. Both are also part of a local band known as Curious Animals. Reyna Spears is from a family of missionaries. She spent part of her childhood in Peru. Dana Farley has made appearences on WYSO in the past including a performance with a bluegrass band in the 1970's.

Reyna and Dana will perforn live, February 2nd, at Canal Street Tavern in Dayton during Dayton Does Dayton. The show is part of a two night extravaganza of music from local artists.

Dennie Eagleson talks about Meme: A Cultural Transmission on Excursions

Meme: Culture in Transmission is currently showing at the Herndon Gallery on the Antioch College campus. The Creative Director of the gallery, Dennie Eagleson and one of the exhibit's contributing artists, Will Davis, talked with Nikki Dakota on Excursions about the exhibit. The idea for the exhibit grew up around the concept.

Live on Excursions: The Savory Chickens

WYSO was pleased to welcome live into the studio, The Savory Chickens. They will be playing on January 19th at the Springfield Arts Musuem during the opening reception of Outside in Ohio. The event starts at 5:30pm, and The Savory Chickens take the stage at 6:30pm.

The Savory Chickens are mostly a family based band consisting of Ricky Barnes on guitar and vocals, his two children, Henry and Audrey Barnes both on fiddle and vocals, Matt Newman on bass, and Michael Falk on Banjo. Ricky raised his two children on classical and fiddle music from a young age.
