Mark Memmott

Mark Memmott is one of the hosts of NPR's "The Two-Way" news blog.

"The Two-Way," which Memmott helped to launched when he came to NPR in 2009, focuses on breaking news, analysis, and the most compelling stories being reported by NPR News and other news media.

Before joining NPR, Memmott worked for nearly 25 years as a reporter and editor at USA Today. He focused on a range of coverage from politics, foreign affairs, economics, and the media. He's reported from places across the Unites States and the world, including half a dozen trips to Afghanistan in 2002-2003.

During his time at USA Today, Memmott, helped launch and lead three USAToday.com news blogs: "On Deadline," "The Oval" and "On Politics," the site's 2008 presidential campaign blog.

VIDEO: Deadly Heat Spreads Across Nation

No story this morning is likely affecting more Americans than the deadly, record-breaking heat wave from Texas up through the Midwest and east to the mid-Atlantic states and New England. There are heat warnings up in 30 states.

And as Korva reported earlier, at least 22 deaths have been attributed to the plus-100 degree temperatures.

Progress Still 'Elusive' On Deficit-Reduction Deal

Though the negotiations that many care most about are over ending the NFL lockout, we'll look first at where things stand in the deficit-reduction talks — one day before what the White House had said is the deadline for reaching a deal if everything is going to be written, passed and signed by Aug. 2, when the federal government reaches its "debt ceiling."

Atlantis On Schedule For Landing In Florida

Space shuttle Atlantis has just started a three-minute "de-orbit burn" and is beginning its descent into Earth's atmosphere. It's coming home after NASA's last shuttle mission into space.

The shuttle and its four-member crew are due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:56 a.m. ET. They've been in space nearly 13 days.

Minnesota's Shutdown Ends

"Gov. Mark Dayton (D) has signed the state budget, ending a 20-day state government shutdown," our friends at Minnesota Public Radio report.

They add that "Dayton signed nine budget bills and three other spending bills about five hours after the Republican-controlled Legislature approved them."
