The SOCHE Talks are a collaboration with the Southwest Ohio Council for Higher Education. In this monthly series we’ll hear from faculty and staff from areas colleges and universities on a wide variety of subjects. It's an effort to bring Miami Valley research and thinking into the public arena – a way to enlighten the world with local knowledge.
There have been a lot of discussions that seem to be happening behind the scenes about how to get this resolved before this goes to the ballot to voters in about 80 or so days, in a little over 2 months. There was some talk about how some republican leaders were trying to get union leaders to deal with this.
The state’s highest court says ProgressOhio, the liberal policy group that sued over JobsOhio, needs to take the case to a lower court before it can be heard in the Ohio Supreme Court. ProgressOhio’s Brian Rothenberg says his group is considering that option. Rothenberg says one of the reasons he started his case at the Ohio Supreme Court is that the recently enacted JobsOhio law mandated that action. The court’s ruling does not address the constitutionality of JobsOhio.
The state says Ohio's unemployment rate rose in July, the second straight monthly increase following a two-year decline. The Department of Job and Family Services says Ohio's jobless rate increased to 9.0 percent last month, from 8.8 percent in June.
The state says the number of workers unemployed in Ohio in July was 529,000, up from 517,000 in June. The U.S. unemployment rate for July was 9.1 percent, down slightly from 9.2 percent in June.
