New Exotic Animals Rules to be Introduced in Ohio

An Ohio lawmaker plans today to introduce a proposal to ban new ownership of exotic animals.

State Sen. Troy Balderson's office says the measure would also prohibit people from acquiring additional dangerous wildlife. Zoos, circuses, sanctuaries and research facilities would be exempt.

Owners of lions, tigers and other large animals would be banned in 2014 from keeping the creatures unless they met strict care standards.

Ohio Death Penalty Review Committee Meets Again

A state Supreme Court task force analyzing the effectiveness of Ohio's capital punishment law plans another
meeting today as part of its year-long review.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor convened the task force while making it clear it won't debate whether the state should have the death penalty.

The panel has discussed whether Ohio should consider a statewide approach to charging murder defendants with death penalty charges to avoid disparities that arise from county to county.

Proposal Would Mean Air Force Job Cuts in Ohio

Officials say new cuts announced by the U.S. Air Force will mean a loss of about 800 jobs at Air National guard bases in Ohio and 160 positions at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton.

The Air Force on Tuesday announced that President Barack Obama's proposal for the upcoming budget year calls for a reduction of about 10,000 positions nationwide.

In Ohio, the Adjutant General's Department says 846 full- and part-time jobs would be eliminated at Air National Guard bases in Mansfield and Rickenbacker in Columbus. The base in Springfield would lose 47 full-time jobs.

Lawyer: Vatican Overrules 13 Cleveland Closings

A lawyer who fought church cutbacks in the Cleveland area says the Vatican has taken the extraordinary step of
overruling the closing of 13 parishes.

The move represents a rare instance in which Rome has reversed a U.S. bishop on church shutdowns.

Attorney Peter Borre says the Congregation of the Clergy ruled last week that Cleveland's Bishop Richard Lennon failed to follow procedure in the closings three years ago.
