Dayton Youth Radio Camp 2019

WYSO is pleased to announce Dayton Youth Radio Camp 2019, July 8 - 12 at the WYSO studios in Yellow Springs, Ohio.  This week long workshop is open to area students ages 14 - 18, no prior media or journalism skills or coursework required.  Students will collaborate to produce an audio story about an issue affecting the local community.  They will learn and participate in hands-on fielding recording, interviewing, script writing, and digital audio editing in an intensive learning environment with professional instructors working in Public Radio.

Fee: Dayton Youth Radio Camp is $300 per student to be paid in advance via the WYSO website. If you wish to pay by check, please contact Juliet Fromholt at jfromholt@wyso.org or 937-769-1387 to arrange registration or to inquire about partial scholarship opportunities. Lunch and snacks are included in the registration fee. If you need a vegetarian or GF meal please let us know.  

Schedule:

Dayton Youth Radio Camp will begin promptly at 10am and end at 4pm each day. 

On Friday at 5pm, parents and guardians are invited to a Listening Party at the WYSO Studios where we’ll celebrate our accomplishments and play our work. Please plan to come and support your teen!  

Location and Transportation:

Dayton Youth Radio Camp will take place primarily at the WYSO Studios at 150 East South College Street in Yellow Springs.  Parents/guardians are responsible for their student’s transportation to and from WYSO each day. 

We will be doing some recordings outside on the Antioch College campus and in Yellow Springs so please wear comfortable shoes.  Students will always be accompanied by instructors or other WYSO staff members during outside recording sessions.

Laptops and Recording Equipment:

WYSO will provide audio recording equipment for the class free of charge.

Each student is encouraged to bring a laptop for digital audio editing exercises.  If you do not have a laptop, please let Basim Blunt at bblunt@wyso.org

Instructor Bio:

Basim Blunt joined WYSO as a member of the 2012 Community Voices program. His work has earned him a “New Voices” Scholar award by (AIR) Association of Independents in Radio. Basim produced the award-winning documentary "Boogie Nights: A History of Funk Music in Dayton".

As project coordinator for Dayton Youth Radio, he teaches broadcasting and storytelling skills to high school students. Basim works with about 45 teenagers each year from various schools in the Miami Valley, guiding each student’s story from the classroom to the WYSO airwaves. He also hosts Behind the Groove, which airs Friday nights on WYSO, 10pm - midnight.
