Activate Now – The March Begins

Marchers mourning the death of four black children killed in the 1963 Alabama church bombing.

Activism can be subtle and silent. But in Yellow Springs and  Antioch College activism is about being seen and being heard, about moving from passivity to action, from injustice to justice. The WYSO Archives give us a view into the movements that have been formed and forged in our community.

Take a walk along the path of activism that wends its way through campus and the village of Yellow Springs, and learn a little history about the legacy of activism from the 1960s and 70s.

Activate Now – Downtown Yellow Springs

This is the seventh stop of the Marching On project for the Hernd0n Gallery's current exhibition Unpacking the Archives: Frameworks for Change--Activate Now! The final picture in the above slideshow is a map showing all of the stops on this tour of activism.

In the early 1960s, the Antioch College campus and the village of Yellow Springs were united in action against the last vestiges of discrimination in public accommodations in the village. Lewis Gegner refused to cut Black men’s hair in his downtown barbershop despite court orders to integrate.
