Central Ohio Counties Lead In Population Growth

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Central Ohio counties are leading the state in population growth categories.

Population estimates released by the census bureau show Franklin County - home to Columbus - recorded by far the most births in the state last year, 18,200. Adjacent Delaware County had the biggest percentage growth - 2.09 percent - in Ohio in the same period.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Ohio on the whole lost almost 7,400 people to migration last year. Almost half of that loss came in Cuyahoga County, home to Cleveland.

Ohio Bill Would Require Notice For Overpaid Taxes

Ohio bill would require notice for overpaid taxes

Businesses and taxpayers would be notified when they overpay their taxes under a bill passed by the Ohio House.

The measure was passed Wednesday and now goes to the Senate.

It would allow Ohio's tax commissioner to give automatic refunds or provide credit toward future taxes if a taxpayer has overpaid - similar to when consumers overpay on their utility bills.

Ohio Prison Guards Union Seeks Additional Officiers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The union representing Ohio prison guards wants an extra 400 officers to combat what it calls a sharp increase in the number of serious assaults by inmates on staff.

The union says an upcoming state budget proposal of 89 officers at three individual prisons is not enough and will lead to more injuries and added workers' comp and overtime costs.

The Ohio Civil Service Employees Association said Thursday the major assault rate has hit a 7-year high even as nearly 850 guard positions have been cut.

Ohio Spends Another $2 Million For Road Salt

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio officials have approved spending another $2 million on road salt to replenish supplies used during the long, snowy winter.

The state Controlling Board on Monday granted the request from the Ohio Department of Transportation was for more than $2 million to buy about 30,000 tons of salt from Cargill De-Icing Technology Inc. and Morton Salt Inc. 

Documents show the state is paying about $73.88 per ton for 20,000 tons from Cargill, and $56.75 a ton for another 10,000 tons from Morton.
