Champion City Kings A Success In Springfield

The Springfield Champion City Kings dedicated a new scoreboard Thursday night.

Springfield's collegiate summer baseball franchise, the Champion City Kings, will conclude its inaugural season next week. The team has made a good impression so far on fans and city officials.

Last night was a good example of the team's progress: The Kings unveiled a brand new $200,000 video scoreboard prior to their game against the Richmond River Rats. The scoreboard is 34 feet tall and features an 11-foot-high video monitor.

Springfield's Champion City Kings To Throw Out First Pitch Wednesday Night

Clark County's new amateur minor league baseball team, the Champion City Kings, will open its season Wednesday night at Carleton Davidson Stadium in Springfield against the Chillicothe Paints.  The franchise is expected to pump more than $2 million into the local economy.

Springfield resident and former pro player Rick White is the general manager of the Kings. He says the Champion City Kings will offer fans a good time that's not hard on the wallet.

First Inclusive Playground To Be Built In Clark County

Nearly 100 volunteers will gather at Snyder Park in Springfield on Saturday to help build the first playground  in Clark County that will allow disabled kids to interact with non-disabled children.  The Springfield Rotary Club developed the idea to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Rotary Club Chairwoman Mel Marsh says there were many ideas tossed around about how the organization could commemorate its anniversary, but the inclusive playground was the best.

Historic City-Owned Golf Course In Springfield Facing Closure

The National Trail Parks and Recreation District Board in Clark County will meet Saturday morning to decide whether or not to close one of the city's historic public golf courses. Springfield's 93-year-old Snyder Park Golf Course might be shut down due to budget cuts.

Like many other publicly funded golf courses in the Miami Valley area, Springfield's three municipally owned courses all brought in less revenue than what was paid to operate them with taxpayer's money. Parks Director Leann Castillo says the financial outlook isn't good for the city-owned courses.

Amateur Baseball League Selects Springfield As Site For New Franchise

Clark County is getting a new amateur minor league baseball franchise. The team will be known as the Champion City Kings and will play a 60 game schedule starting in June of 2014, with 30 home games scheduled for Springfield's Carleton Davidson Stadium.

The Champion City name comes from the 1800s, when Springfield's Glessner Company manufactured Champion brand farm equipment.
