Niki Dakota chats up Mieka Pauley

Oct 8, 2013

October 4th, 2013

Niki was able to sit down and talk with Mieka Pauley, Boston-born folk singer, before her Friday performance at the Kuss auditorium with Johnathon Kingham.

Mieka presented a few songs from her album 'The Science of Making Choices', a name that she notes has no merit to the contents, as the songs are all "...me messing up, song by song."

Mieka played her set at 7:30 that evening.

I am Sam Bodary. I have been the summer intern for Niki Dakota on Excursions for the past three or so months. One of my responsibilities is to post here when we have live guests on the show, be it an interview, performance, or a little of both. Welp, I have run into a small predicament.

I was the live guest. This may read a bit awkwardly.

Davis Rogan dropped in to chat with Niki today and link Dayton to the heart of New Orleans. He shared stories of his experiences as a DJ and growing up in New Orleans, as well as his work with the HBO show Treme. Racing in at the last minute, he was joined by Paul Sanchez, another New Orleans native, songwriter, and guitarist. We listened to songs from each of their records, with plenty of anecdotes mixed in throughout.

You can see Davis and Paul perform a solo/duet show tonight at 8pm at Canal Street Tavern.

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Susan Werner stopped by the studio on Monday following a show with the Springfield Arts Council just the previous night. Listen in to hear her talk about the importance of agriculture in the changing world and her recent album themed around farms. On top of everything, she even plays three songs live just for us.

Atlanta musicians Gillia and Kevin J stopped in just in time from the airport to join Niki at the end of today's show. They shared their soulful voices a cappella in studio, and brought a couple tracks to listen to.

DJ Sparechange will join them tomorrow for a free preformance. They will be performing at the King's Yard in Downtown Yellow Springs tomorrow from 4pm to 7pm for a FREE and all ages 4th of July celebration.

Nelly's Echo on Excursions

May 31, 2013

Nelson Emokpae, performing under the name "Nelly's Echo," was a finalist on season three of the NBC show The Voice. He called in to Excursions today to talk with Niki about where he came from and how a refugee from Africa achieved musical success in the US. They discuss the reasoning behind the name "Nelly's Echo" as well as his experience for performing for the armed forces in Cuba.

Nelson and his two band mates will perform on Saturday, June 8th at 8pm at the historic Sidney Theatre in Sidney, Ohio.

Mandy Jewell on Excursions

May 29, 2013

Mandy Jewell stopped by Excursions today to tell Niki a bit about her adventure down to Tennessee to record her debut EP, entitled "The Road to Tennessee." They spoke about her unique blue Fender acoustic guitar, as well as the heartbreak that led her to some of the songs she's most proud of.

Mandy will play at One-Eyed Jacks tomorrow at 9pm with Good English and Repeating Arms filling out the bill for a night of great music.

Blues singer and guitarist Austin "Walkin' Cane" called in to the studio today to chat about his album, "Murder of a Blues Singer" and share a couple stories with Niki Dakota. Niki played three tracks from his album as they spoke about his guitars, sponsorship from National, and how he got that catchy nickname.

Austin "Walkin' Cane" will be performing at the beautifully restored Murphy Theatre in downtown Wilmington this Saturday, June 1st.

Songwriters in the Round on Excursions

May 24, 2013

Kevin Milner, Daniel Dye, and Tim Pritchard stopped by the WYSO studios today to share a couple big laughs and great songs. Niki Dakota hosted as they all told stories and played from the heart.

These three musicians, along with six other of Dayton's best singer/songwriters, will be performing at Canal Street Tavern on Sunday night at 8pm  for the Singer/Songwriter Celebration.

Local Girl Scout Troop 30349 from here in Yellow Springs is hosting a showing of "Finding Kind," a documentary about girls bullying girls. Niki Dakota interviewed Molly Stroud, one of the films producers and Victoria Osborne, one of the members of the troop, about the film and the issues it highlights.
