Dayton Metro Library Breaks Ground On New Site

The former site of Fairview High School in Dayton will soon be home to the newest and largest branch in the Dayton Metro Library system.

More than a hundred spectators gathered Tuesday morning as officials broke ground on Dayton Metro Library's Northwest Branch. The expansive green space at Philadelphia Drive and Hillcrest Avenue was the home of Fairview High School, which was closed in 2010 and demolished a year later.

Indictment Alleges Ohio Charter School Corruption

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A school superintendent and three more people have been indicted on federal charges alleging they used an Ohio charter school in Dayton in a corruption conspiracy.
 
Federal and state officials in Columbus on Tuesday announced a grand jury indictment charging the defendants with conspiracy and with aiding and abetting federal programs bribery. The indictment states that the Arise Academy school operated through 2010 and received at least $10,000 a year in federal dollars through the state of Ohio.

Acid Spill Evacuates Ten Wright State Buildings

An acid spill Monday at Wright State University led to the evacuation of ten buildings on campus and the cancellation of classes for the day.

A lab technician spilled more than two liters of acetic acid, a chemical used as a cleaning agent in classroom laboratories, in the basement of Oelman Hall, just before 10 a.m. Monday.

Freedom Summer: Fifty Years and Remembering

50 years ago this month, volunteers from across the country came to Oxford, Ohio to prepare for a pivotal event in the civil rights movement. Dave Barber created this story for WYSO'S Community Voices.

What's Great in Dayton: June 20 - 26, 2014

The DeWeese Ridgecrest Garden Showcase, Art Show and Tea is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ten gardens in Dayton's DeWeese Ridgecrest neighborhood will be on the tour.

The Oregon Historic District Society is also having its annual Garden Tour of nine distinctive private gardens on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is a rich mix of historic and contemporary homes, with architecture ranging from the mid-1800s to modern.
